Bogotá, 2-6 October 2006
The objective of this seminar-workshop, addressed to judges and public prosecutors of the Justice and Peace Unit, was to promote an exchange of ideas on international standards and best practices, as well as lessons learned from international criminal justice and transitional justice mechanisms. The seminar focused on aspects related to the implementation of the Law that, due to their complexity and importance, require special attention, in particular the judicial proceedings (including procedural safeguards during the investigation stage and assessment of compliance with alternative sentences) and the rights of victims (participation in the process, protection and the right to full and effective reparation). In addition to representatives from Colombian institutions, experts from the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia and the International Criminal Court also participated.
The seminar was opened by Colombia’s Attorney-General, Mario Iguarán, the President of the Colombian Superior Judiciary Council, José Alfredo Escobar, Colombia’s Procurador General, Edgardo Maya, as well as Shlomo Ben-Ami and Emilio Cassinello, Executive Vice-President and Director-General of CITpax respectively, and Baltasar Garzón, Magistrate of the National High Court of Spain and member of the CITpax Advisory Board.
