Exchange Workshop with Prosecutors of the Justice and Peace Unit: Criteria for the Selection and Precedence of Facts in the Judicial Processes in the Framework of the Justice and Peace Law

Medellin, 18 June 2008

The exchange workshop with Prosecutors of the Justice and Peace Unit of Medellin was organized within the framework of the “International Observatory on the DDR Process and the Implementation of the Justice and Peace Law” with the purpose of analyzing the responses of international justice in contexts of massive crimes where it is not viable to investigate and prosecute all crimes committed and therefore it is necessary to select and give priority to a certain number of cases. In view of the excessive extension of the preliminary phase of the processes in the context of Justice and Peace, as well as the need to guarantee the right to effective justice and to give appropriate answers to the victims, the meeting offered a space for discussion about possible criteria defined on the international level, and in particular by the International Criminal Court, for choosing or giving priority to the facts, and analyzed as well the possibility of putting those criteria into practice in the Colombian case.
