Seminar Transitional Justice in the Justice and Peace Process in Colombia



Madrid, 17-18 July 2008

 
In view of the inevitable obstacles in the implementation of the Justice and Peace Law, CITpax organized this seminar to analyse the challenges to Justice as well as to Peace, as a contemporary reference in the field of transitional justice at the international level.

 

At the seminar, the current state of the process was presented and proposals were made to consolidate the application of the Law. Within this context, participants considered alternatives to solve the legal situation of the 19,000 demobilized of the Colombian United Self-Defence groups, the nature of criminal organizations and of the crimes committed by illegal armed groups, and the competence of the International Criminal Court regarding crimes included in the Justice and Peace Law.

 

The following, among others, attended the meeting: Magistrates from the Criminal Division within the Supreme Court of Justice, María del Rosario González, Julio Socha de Salamanca, Augusto Ibañez and Sigifredo Espinosa –President of the Criminal Division-; the General Attorney’s Office; the Procurador General de la Nación, Edgardo Maya; the Prosecutor’s Office of the International Criminal Court and the Magistrate of the National High Court of Spain, Baltasar Garzón.
